A few of my Favorite Things ....

Today as the day grew warmer with temps beginning to rise this week well into the 100's .. it brought back memories of summer's past. It reminded me of some of my favorite things and got me to reminiscing and dreaming of days gone by and the dreams that still lye within my heart ..

 ~ Picket Fences and Daisies ~

Be it a beautiful and pristine white picket fence or a tattered and worn one ..I love them all. There is something that touches my heart in seeing a picket fence .. they contain a little bit of dreamland . I can pass by dozens of houses in my nearby neighborhoods and the few that have the picket fence lining the drive and the yard ..those are always the houses that draw me in .. I can't say why but for me a picket fence dressing the front of a home .. surrounding a garden or lining a drive just speaks of home .

and

My Favorite flower is a daisy ... I love the fresh beauty of them and the simplicity ... I could have a yard full of daisies and pluck them one by one filling old pitchers and jars throughout the house with them each day .. Daisies make me smile !

~ Screen Doors ~

Yes Screen Doors are on my list of favorite things .. They are so welcoming.  From Simple to exquisite .. Painted or Wood .. They bring back memories of spring breezes ... summer days keeping the flys out  of the house ..and Fall days when the wind blows and just catches the screen and causes it to give a slight squeak or a quick slam ...

~ Fresh Orange Juice ~

On a warm summer day a refreshing glass of orange Juice in the morning is definitely on the favorite's list for starting out the day ... It's a little punch of flavor that get's the body moving ...

~ Sunflowers ~

I remember when we lived in Missouri on our farm .. starting a small Sunflower patch .. Planting each seed and watering them ..and watching them shoot up high into the sky ... Sunflowers are certainly a favorite ...

~ Horses~

I grew up with horses ..and started out on a little pony named "Buttercup" ..and then graduated to  mama's horse "Sugar " .. and later enjoyed my own horse "Autumn".  I love horses they are gentle giants .. I love their nibbling lips when eating bits of apple or grain from my hand .. I love their wiggly lips and big breaths against my cheek .. and I love the sound of their hooves against the ground and the gentle sway when sitting upon them and slowly riding out over a country field ..

They without question will always hold a high spot on my favorite's list ...

~ Full Moons over the Countryside ~

I was absolutely blessed to have lived in Missouri on a 40 acre farm for a short time.... in that time I was so thrilled to experience the light of a full moon shining on a hay field. From our 40 foot long porch filled with rockers, lanterns burning with citronella and flower boxes with their summer blooms .. an evening spent rocking, reading and listening to the crickets while being in awe of the moonlight shining so bright on our hay field is a memory that is an absolute favorite of mine .. and I pray that one day very soon The Lord will bless us with the opportunity to return to the countryside for good. I long to enjoy that full moon on the hayfield once again .. It's a site I should never tire of ..

~ Porch Sittin ~

As  a young girl I was always in a hurry to do this or that to go here or there .. to talk to this person or that one .. to blast the music loud as can be or sit in front of the t.v. drinking in the programs stealing away life ...

And then I found porch sitting... and it's a life changer . Learning to relax .. to shut out the fast paced world that trys to thieve your days away .. to actually sit quietly with your thoughts, to enjoy the song of a bird ..or watch it's flight or landing on a fence post. To enjoy the antlers of a deer slightly peering out the top of the tall overgrown field and realizing how perfectly God made it so that it truly blends in to the surroundings it lives in .. To watch the squirrel scampering up and down the tree carrying twigs and odd little bits back and forth .. and to here the mew of the barn kittens romping through the grass rolling and playing with each other ... Or to simply close your eyes and let your body just be for as long as you choose ... not being a slave to time or work ...Just enjoying life and God's creation ..

Porch Sitting a true favorite of mine ..

I hope you have enjoyed a few of my favorite things ...

Free Printable Vintage Cookie Recipes ~ Cowboy & Raggedy Ann Cookies ..~

Over a Year ago while Abbey and I were out at a local estate sale ..we found 2 big wood Recipe boxes.. both filled to the brim with hand written recipes and recipes clipped from food boxes, wrappers, newspaper clippings and the like.

We can't pass up recipe boxes . .. and a few over the years have yielded some pretty unsavory recipes that caused us to scratch our head and ask ... Really ?

Then Other recipe boxes such as these ..just made you sit down and grow hungrier by the minute from the pot roast, to the Chili ..and of course the cookies.

Before we could go through one of the recipe boxes though we had to pull it out from underneath my sewing machine pedal .. I sit at a large work table to sew that is rather tall .. Great for cutting fabrics and working on projects because your not constantly bending over and getting a back or neck ache but a little odd for reaching the foot pedal of the sewing machine so I quickly remedied the long reach by placing the large wood recipe box just in the perfect spot under the table and placing my foot pedal on it well over a year ago..LOL ! Hey whatever works..as long as my leg is now comfy when sewing.

So This week we reminisced through those old recipes and Found 5 Vintage Cookie Recipes that we thought had charming names or some fun ingredients or fun designs ... to share with you all.

 Feel free to save them and print them out. I have provided a cute Page Print out ..or below each page is the original recipe as it was found in the recipe box which can also be saved and printed easily.

~ Raggedy Ann Cookies ~

~ Cowboy Cookies ~

(we found these cookies are also know as Roy Rogers cookies and Laura Bush Cookies and have a popularity in the Great State of  Texas)

~ Quick Chocolate Chip Cookie Sticks ~

(we loved how you bake these in to small sticks )

~ Oatmeal Raisin Cookies ~

( These are made with "Best Foods" Mayonnaise)

~ Cereal Cookies ~
( a little different from the rice krispy bars of today but the recipe looks good )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So have any of you gals Made these cookies ? Or did you grow up with Mama or Grandma baking them ? ... we would love to know ... Leave a comment and share a little Baking love...
Our Daily Bread .. Girlfriends in Christ
Do you have a daily devotional you enjoy ?
As many of you have seen on my sidebar my favorite devotional is "Jesus Calling" by Sarah Young.
I recently purchased her newest devotional "Jesus Today" while on a trip to Costco. I was surprised and delighted to find them in their book section. I have also been enjoying this newest devotional and would recommend it as much as "Jesus Calling" especially if your walking a hard road in life right now as Sarah wrote this newest one while facing a very long term illness, and that most definitely comes through in the daily devotions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
About a Month back my friend Christie e-mailed me this great online devotional she wanted to share with me .."Girlfriends in Christ"

I loved it so much and found that it was a daily devotional delivered to your e-mail box and signed up immediately ..

Each day I thoroughly enjoy it .. without doubt it's food for the soul .. it's a way to start out a beautiful day to fill the tank if you will , to put on the armor of God ..to ready yourself for whatever the day may bring.

Today's devotional I really loved ..because Sharon who wrote today's devotional uses her flea market find to give us a visual look at how God works in our Lives .. and I wanted to share that with you all today ...

Shabby Chic Refinishing

Sharon Jaynes

Today’s Truth
If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
(2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV).

Friend to Friend
Junk. That’s what my family and friends thought of most of my purchases. But to me, they were treasures waiting to be revealed.
When I was in my late teens, I had an unusual fetish for beat-up antique furniture. While most of my friends were at the mall shopping for clothes, I was at estate sales, flea markets, yard sales, and auctions hunting for antiques. Often, when I brought my purchases home, my family would roll their eyes and say, "I can't believe you paid money for that old piece of junk." But I never saw my purchases as junk. They just needed a little work…okay, sometimes a lot of work. But I loved the shabby chic projects!
At one estate sale I spied a little drop leaf kitchen table with three spindle-back chairs. I could just imagine a sweet little older lady spending many years sitting at that very table drinking her morning coffee or perhaps her afternoon tea. I could almost hear the faint whispers of thousands of conversations from generations past. The set was painted a hospital green, but I saw that it had great potential. Obviously the other bidders didn't recognize a treasure when they saw one, because ten minutes and $35 later, the set was mine.
I brought the dinette set home, all excited about my great buy, and couldn't understand why no one else shared my enthusiasm "Sharon, do you realize how much time and energy it is going to take to make that old green rickety table look even slightly presentable?" they asked.

 At that point in my life, I had a lot more time than money, so the time wasn't a problem.
Refinishing furniture is a dirty, grueling task. First, I stripped off the paint with paint remover and discovered that not only had the table been green, it had also been blue, and before that white. But underneath it all was pure walnut.
The paint remover raised the grain of the wood, so I had to go back and sand it smooth. If the sanding isn't done well, the finished product will always be a little rough. A few joints were loose from wear and tear, so I glued them back together. Then I applied a warm walnut stain which deepened its color and made the beautiful pattern of the wood grain stand out. Finally, I applied a polyurethane coat to seal and protect the piece.
As I worked I began to think of the old broken table as a symbol of my own life. I was also on the auction block, and God had purchased me with His Son’s precious blood. I had layers and layers of my old self that had to be stripped away to reveal the beauty hidden beneath. This raised my grain, but God sanded me with life experiences and trials to remove the rough edges. He glued my loose joints and mended my broken pieces, for He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Then He put a sealer not only on me but in me – the Holy Spirit who brought out the beauty of who God created me to be.
After I finished refurbishing the old table and chairs, I sat in the garage thinking about all that God had done in my life. My mom opened the door, looked at the old table, and said, "I never thought something so ugly could turn out to be so beautiful."
I said, "Amen."
Where are you in the refinishing process? It’s never really over, this side of heaven. But as we listen to God day by day, He will show us what needs to be stripped off, sanded away, and polished smooth to be all that He has created us to be.

Let’s Pray
Dear Lord, I was such a mess before You transformed me. Thank You for restoring my soul, renewing my spirit, and redeeming my life to become Your treasured possession…a true work of art.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

Now It’s Your Turn
Read 2 Corinthians 5:1-21 to learn more about your refinishing process.
Think back over the past year. What has God used as His sandpaper to refine your rough edges?
What has God used to glue your broken pieces back together?
What has God used to polish your shine?

"overall" I miss you ....

I think it's time for overalls to make a comeback what about you ?

It's funny because I have had overalls on my mind for several months now .. wondering if they ever would make a big comeback to popularity like they were in the early 1990's.

I remember wearing them in denim, corduroy, and light weight cottons. They came in Pants, Shorts, long dresses and short dresses and I'm sure a myriad of other styles too.

They were comfortable ... I'm always for comfort .. Yet they were cute and just what I would call "Classic"

So I had been wanting to get a pair but hadn't truly gone out in search for them.

Last week when Abbey and I went to the Flea Market on Sunday we hit on a dealer that had just opened his van and put out a few boxes of nothing but antique clothes .. and what did my eyes behold at the bottom of a box .....

An authentic railroad  blue and white stripe pair of overalls.  I fell in love with them and along with several other pieces of vintage clothing they came home with me ..

I never even gave thought when I bought them if they would fit me .. at the time I was thinking vintage and what an adorable display they would make .. but after coming home and looking over our finds .. I held them up then tried them on and sure enough they fit .. and I couldn't be more thrilled.

So here's a few picts of my darling New Yet Truly Vintage Overalls .. please excuse the wrinkles as they need a little washing and pressing.

It's funny but ever since I was a young girl ..I much preferred a good pair of Jeans, or overalls to a frilly dress any day. Maybe growing up in the country with Horses and the fact mom encouraged me to make mud pies with her kitchen utensils and Tupperware could be why ..

Farm Girl was just born into me .. and the country is just the place I find the most comfort  in life just like the feeling of a good pair of overalls ...so comfortable ..

************************************

Women wearing overalls hit a high in the 1940's when WWII was on and women were called to work jobs that were then attended to by men..

I love the style of overalls from that era .. and I loved that they belted them too ... although I'm not sure that would work for my waist line today .. but nonetheless it was so cute ..

I love the 3 gals above .. they have their overalls belted at the waist and look at those chickens they are carrying under each arm ..

I imagine this gal was out working her 1940's Victory Garden .. and no less in her charming overalls .. Love her feminine blouse .. Rolled up legs .. and her Saddle Shoes.. I could definitely go for this style !

I imagine this image is new made to look old .. The gal is a bit more modern looking .. but I loved the patched overalls she is wearing .. It makes me want to find a pair cut them up and patch them up ..LOL !

O.k. so I want to claim this is me in this photo .. Well because she is just the most adorable thing ever ..and I want to be that adorable ..LOL !

She has on those true 1940's overalls with the fitted waist .. although they are so so cute ..I'm not sure in this day and age that many of us could sport that fitted and high of a waist .. that is unless we all go back to wearing corset's and girdles ..and get out of Low-rise Pants and hit the gym ..

But I would  definitely wear that charming gingham cotton blouse ..and that too too darling straw hat ... !

So here's to overalls and hoping they make a popular comeback ...but if they don't and you see a lone gal sporting a pair .. You guessed it .. It'll be Me ! I'm wearing what I love even if it's not the popular thing.

I always have been an upstream kind of gal ..

So do you girls have or wear overalls anymore ?
